STAGE DESCRIPTION
This year the Tour doesn't start with a time trial - for the first time since 1966. This rolling course from Brest to Plumelec has nothing big enough to really split the peloton, but a 2km uncategorised climb just before the finish could really spice things up. There is no doubt the crowds will be huge, swelled by Brits travelling to Brittany. There are several riders who could step up and take the yellow jersey - there'll be breaks and solo attacks aplenty.

STAGE FACTS
• This will be the third time since the Second World War that Brest has hosted the Tour start.
• From 1993 to 2007 the first road stage of the Tour has been won in a sprint, with the exception of 2002 where Rubens Bertogliati won from a break.
• Before that escapes won the first road stage from 1986 to 1992.
• The last time a Tour stage finished in Plumelec (in 1997), Erik Zabel won after a big crash split the bunch.
